SIXTEEN candidates will vie for top honours in Pikom-Computimes ICT
Awards 2002, an annual event to recognise excellence in the local
information and communications technology (ICT) industry.
The
nominees were selected from about 100 submissions received by the
organisers, the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry
Malaysia (Pikom) and Computimes.
This year, the event offers five categories of awards which are ICT
Hardware of the Year, ICT Software of the Year, Internet Application
of the Year, Emerging ICT Company of the Year, and ICT Achiever of
the Year.
In
the Emerging ICT Company of the Year category, the finalists are
Buying Guide Online Sdn Bhd, QuickNet Com (M) Sdn Bhd, and I-Silicon
Sdn Bhd, while in the ICT Hardware of The Year category, the
candidates are Scada System by TCK Technology Sdn Bhd, G.Pro System
by New Paradigm Technologies Sdn Bhd and Iris Smart Term ST-2e by
Iris Corporation Berhad.
The Internet Application of the Year category pits
www.buyingguide.com.my
(BG Online Sdn Bhd) against e-Ticket (CMG Technologies Sdn Bhd),
www.mobileExec.net
(mobileExec (M) Sdn Bhd) and Commerce Exchange (CMnet Dotcom Sdn
Bhd).
In
the ICT Software of the Year category, the finalists are Chrysanth
Inventory Manager 2001 (Chrysanth Software Sdn Bhd), NDT
eFulfillment – Warehouse Management System (NDT Software Consulting
Sdn Bhd), RMM – Meterlink (Paracorp Technology Sdn Bhd) and
Web-based booking engine Web-BE (HotelPlatform Sdn Bhd).
The
two shortlisted nominees for the ICT Achiever of The Year category
are Looi Hoong Thoong, the founder of Looi Software and Eg Kah Yee,
chairman and chief executive officer of Pallete Multimedia Bhd.
All
the finalists were presented with a certificate of appreciation at a
ceremony in Kuala Lumpur last Friday. The results will be announced
during the Pikom’s 14th Malaysian ICT Awards and Dinner on Oct 4.
“I am
pleasantly surprised by the quality of the nominations received in
particular the finalists. Many of them are already successfully
conquering regional markets and are worthy representatives of
Malaysian innovation,” said Pikom chairman Looi Kien Leong. He
explained that this year, the organisers made some changes to the
categories as well as the award title, from IT to ICT. This is to
reflect the changing landscape of the ICT industry and to make the
awards more relevant to the industry.
“We
have also consolidated some of the categories. For this year, we
have a total of five categories for the ICT awards. I must say that
the quality of applications has improved tremendously,” Looi said.
“The
evaluation committee had a mammoth task selecting the finalists.
This is particularly so for the ICT software and Internet
application categories where the nominations exceeded 30 each. We
also noted that the finalists put in more effort in their
presentation and this made the judges determination of the victors
even harder. It was positive indicators of greater enhancements.”
